Gerontology is the study of social, psychological, biological, cognitive and cultural aspects of aging, and it commonly intersects with a wide variety of fields. With populations aging worldwide, the demand for professionals with expertise in aging is growing rapidly.

The Gerontology and Aging and Mental Health micro-credential courses provide foundational knowledge and understanding of various aspects of aging; implications of the aging process on individual development; factors that influence the perception and treatment of older adults; and applications of the aging theories and issues in the field of aging.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe normal aging processes and developmental tasks of older adults.
  • Examine and apply a broad range of theories around contemporary issues in aging that relate to practice with older adults and their families.
  • Compare the various dynamics of diverse older adults and their caregivers.
  • Develop skills and techniques necessary for working with older adults and systems that commonly serve them.
  • Identify and analyze the major theories related to later life development.
  • Identify resources within local communities that help older adults remain independent.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work within ethics and values specific to the older adult population.
